How to Stop an Area Rug From Bunching on the Carpet

How to Stop an Area Rug From Bunching on the Carpet

Area rugs let you add color, interest and texture to a room. But when your area rug slips, slides and bunches up underfoot it becomes more of a problem than a solution. You can anchor your area rugs on top of carpeting to prevent them from slip sliding away. Follow a few steps to ensure your area rug works as a functional designer addition for your home rather than a tripping hazard.

1 Vacuum the carpeting where your area rug will go. Move furniture out of the way to create ample space to work in.

2 Unroll the area rug face down. Use a few heavy books to hold down the edges and let them uncurl. Lay out the rug pad on top of the area rug. Use a utility knife to cut to size. Measure to make sure the edges of the area rug extend 1 inch past the rug pad.

3 Remove the rug pad and create an X shape with double-sided tape crossing the center of the rug. Frame the edges of the rug with additional tape. Place the rug pad on the wrong side of the area rug and smooth it across the tape until a strong hold develops.

4 Gently flip the area rug with the pad attached and position it on the carpeting.

Things You Will Need
  • Rug pad
  • Utility knife
  • Double-sided utility tape
Tip
  • For a large area rug, have two people flip and place the it on the carpeting once the rug pad has been attached.
Warning
  • Keep utility knives out of the reach of children.
