Make the Most of Your Storage Space
No-Fail Rules for
Organizing
Are you having a store-your-stuff
crisis? If you can’t add more actual storage cabinets to your living space
(which is most likely the case), never fear. You can always increase the
capacity of what's already there. This includes kitchen cupboards,
free-standing wardrobes, media centers, and medicine cabinets. No matter the shape
or size, there are certain things that work every single time. We've got them
right here; give them a go and bring your crisis to a close.
1.
Get Rid of Duplicates or the Unnecessary
This is step one and a must-do when
you attack any storage space. You don't need multiple bottles of shampoo, three
crock pots, or 50 pairs of black jeans. Pare down to the essentials and you'll
find that organizing everything else becomes much more manageable.
2.
Consolidate
Get rid of packaging, or anything
that makes products bulkier. Take the cotton swabs out of their boxes and find
containers where they fit without unnecessary gaps and pockets of wasted space.
3.
Go Vertical
Think in terms of layers and start
using the precious space you're not already taking full advantage of.
4.
Use the Right Tools
Pick products that fit your exact
needs. Either DIY or buy store-bought inserts that increase the amount of stuff
that cabinets hold. Plan for plate racks, lazy Susans, drawer inserts, vertical
cookie sheet slots inside cabinets, or shelf risers. Don't forget to make use
of the backs of doors or useful tools, like magnets or tension rods that have
endless uses, and diverse applications.
5.
Prioritize
Keep the stuff you use every day
right in front and store less-used items in the back of the cabinet. You won’t
upset your delicate organizational ecosystem when you need your hair dryer
every morning.
